skyward 199x300 NQLE Scatter & BrushStarted as a experiment to help a student (AL) with her tutorial, then I decided to model the project I want you guys to do this week.

All images are shots I took, all brushes (except one before I had the idea) are ones I created, and then just took ideas from a couple different tutorials…

Unfortunately I didn’t bookmark them. Grrr.

banskystyleclose 300x257 NQLE Banksy StyleSo this weekend I caught an AMAZING documentary on street art called “Exit Through The Gift Shop“- and learned more about world renown street artist Banksy. I was inspired… so I wanted to recreate that stencil look in the images. I’ll try to get it into tutorial format soon… Can’t remember all the experimenting- but for the stencil itself I needed to give kind of a HDR treatment to my threshold images because the lighting was too uneven.

waterlife 300x255 NQLE waterBeen slack on posting the NQLE’s… and doing a lot of web stuff that’s not visual so I can’t really post… but here’s a project I knocked out in an hour yesterday…

Tip- after you build the 3d texture, select everything on the layer with the path you turned 3D and change it to black. that’s how you get rid of the ugly white look.

illyeye 231x300 NQLE Eye ExperimentLooking in to a good way to do eyes in Illustrator. Gotta figure out the colors, but I’m SOOOOOO Close!!! When I figure it out I’ll definitely post a tutorial set!

Hints:

  • Distorted circles rotated and change colors & blending modes for iris muscles
  • Put a custom gradient with opacity over the top for the outside edge and pupil. Goes black, light, transparent, black from middle to edge.

illyeye2 231x300 NQLE Eye ExperimentNext Eye Idea:

  • Stars with tons of points
  • Distort, warp, bloat, pucker.
  • Duplicate, turn, recolor
  • Experiment with blending modes
  • Add distorted circles for muscle with drop shadow. Experiment with pathfinder and blending modes.

releasefinal really 300x194 NQLE
It’s not that I haven’t been doing any, it’s just that I neglect to post them. Lately it’s been a lot of web and video experimentation that is difficult to post since the school filters seem to be targeting anything helpful and free lately.

You release your art, you ARE your art… See your reflection?

And by the way, Props to Max M. who had an awesome eagle in one of his images that was the inspiration for this image. And I know the text is horrible, I haven’t been able to see what I want from it yet, and not even sure I like the phrase. This is still a WIP. I may bring the tail down some to make the nose more obvious…

Tweaked tail & Text. Still not perfectly happy with the text. Think I’m comfortable with the image. Read more for a progression of the image.

growth 300x194 The NQL ExperimentSo… I realized that I can easily get distracted, stuck in my own design or technical ruts, and that I can loose touch with the applications I teach by only teaching them. So this post is the beginning of the NQLE- The Never Quit Learning Experiment. It’s for myself, other teachers, and former students to post to the site to demonstrate their commitment to the Cause. This is my first entry… and here is where I got the inspiration.

Tips to make it easier/Tips for pros- Learn to use textured brushes to make the uneven letter outlines. Use masks to create the letters rather than selections. Experiment with colors more and blending modes/layers. Adjustment layers/smart objects/masks… KEEP YOUR WORKFLOW AS NON-DESTRUCTIVE AS POSSIBLE!!! Layer groups and learn to group groups to manipulate the group without affecting the whole image with adjustment layers.
